Having a serious disease like AIDS is enough to make anyone depressed and disinterested in looking after themselves, some people who have AIDS have lost friends and family because they cannot deal with their status, but if that person has a pet, they know their pet is loyal and does not judge them. Pets help AIDS patients cope better because they are a friend that is always there no matter what and this gives the patient some hope and reason to look after themselves because their pet needs them. Organizations who help out AIDS patients with food and medication saw that the patients were giving their food to their pets instead of feeding themselves, this ensured that they had a companion until their dying day and that they had some sort of purpose in life because a lot of AIDS patients lose their jobs because they become too sick to work. Having AIDS is a daily struggle and some days the pain and illness can become too much, but the people who have pets have someone to cheer them up when living seems pointless, animals are always happy and this rubs off onto the patients. An organization called PAWS is an organization that helps AIDS patients to keep and look after their pets, because the patient cannot work to buy their animal food and special medication like Sentinel and other worm and flea tablets that an animal needs every few months, as well as food. Having a pet ensures that the patient also gets some exercise because they may need to play with or walk their pet so this helps the patient’s heart stay healthy. Pets also seem to lower the patients’ blood pressure because they help them to stress less; they help do this because animals don’t complain, judge or expect unrealistic things from them.
