It was only at the beginning of 1986, when the world was burdened with over 20,000 reported AIDS cases; India amazingly was a virgin of the disease. But, scanning across the years, it let uncontrolled increase of the disease with a present astounding estimation of 2.5 million people living with HIV!
It seems, unlike Kenya, India failed to limit the killer-disease’s increasing prevalence and trend. Is it that India has failed to aware its citizens of the AIDS prevention strategies and penetrates the anti-retroviral drugs-resistant zones?
Today, the situation is such that one out of every eight children suffering from the disease across the world are in India!
Disappointingly, about 70,000 children below the age of 15 in India are battling the disease — with some born with it and others who are the victims of contaminated blood transfusion.
It has been reported that the country witnesses nearly 21,000 new infections each year, leaving the world with around 530,000 infected children.
The disease alone has orphaned nearly 15.2 million children worldwide.
Though, new data has revealed the reduced AIDS prevalence in India by half — from previously estimated 5.2 million to 2.5 million now - it seems to have failed with its awareness programs and the disease’s prevention strategies despite its well-equipped manpower and funding.
