AIDS is a terrible disease, and it has taken the lives of many people who have done nothing to deserve the slow and ghastly death it brings about. And a great many scientists have dedicated their professional lives to the destruction of AIDS, so that it can kill no more. However, it has proven to be both very difficult and exceedingly costly to combat this dreaded disease. This being the case, fund raising is still a crucial front in the war we fight against AIDS. What follows is a brief list of a few of the jewelry and fashion fundraisers whose sole aim is to use beauty to combat this ugly disease. In some cases, jewelers such as Tiffany’s and John Hardy donate some of their items, while regular people make what ever they can for the cause. The Empower Campaign is a nation wide effort to educate AIDS orphans in Uganda, Africa. In various public venues, volunteers in the US sell jewelry made by women’s cooperatives in Africa. This jewelry is bought for fair trade prices, and any profit garnered is further donated to local relief agencies. Helping the children of those who have died of AIDS is about the nicest thing a person can do. Every year, the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) in Canada holds a spectacular known as Fashion Cares, in order to finance its programs and AIDS fighting activities. They raise funds by selling tickets and advertising space to gala goers (which is just a fancy way of saying party goers) and their various sponsoring companies, and by selling fashionable wardrobe items. StyleAID is among the most prestigious charity fashion events in the world. Originating in the US, it has also spread outward to Australia, where it has only grown in its success. Recruiting major sponsors and some of the best designers in the world, StyleAID showcases what’s on offer, for the cause of saving lives and families.
